Language Families
Until recently, many linguists and translation specialists postulated the existence of a large language family comprising Finnish on western end and Mongolian, Japanese and Korean on the eastern end. This “super-family” was called the Ural-Altaic Language Family. It was comprised of the Uralic languages (Hungarian, Finnish, Estonian, etc.) and the Altaic languages (Turkish, Mongolian, Kazakh, Uzbek, Tatar, Manchu, etc., plus perhaps Korean and Japanese). Most modern linguists currently argue either that these two families are unrelated, ascribing any similarities to coincidence or mutual influence resulting in "convergence". It is still very interesting to ponder, however, the possibility of two groups of people, as different as the Finns and the Japanese, speak related languages!

Choosing the Right Team
All technical translations are performed by a team of multiple professional linguists —a lead technical translator, an editor, and a proofreader. Our technical translators are required to have at least 5 years experience translating technical documents. Where possible, they are certified by domestic and/or international organizations, hold university degrees in their areas of expertise, and are native speakers of the target language.
Document Preparation
First hand knowledge, along with specialization and research, are the key factors that bring the necessary understanding for all technical translation projects. At the Foreign Language Institute we devote valuable time to study, analyze, and fully understand the technology and services that we translate. Bilingual ability is not enough to get the job done: We do not translate just words, we translate concepts, across languages and across technologies.
Terminology
Most technical translation projects require extensive terminology research and glossary development. This is a continuous process that involves client participation. Frequently, larger clients possess in-house glossaries, and we strive to incorporate them into our translation process. In other case, we can build glossaries from scratch and share them with our clients during and after completion of a project.
Accuracy
All technical translations are reviewed by an expert on the particular subject to ensure that the documents are technically and culturally correct. Even technical translation can suffer from cultural misinterpretation and we constantly review our technical translations to avoid this problem.
Specialists
Our technical translation team includes, amongst other specialist, Biologists, Engineers (Civil, Chemical, Electrical, Hydraulic, Mechanical), Geologists, MDs, PhDs, and Patent Lawyers. All of our technical translators are native speakers of the target language.
